Although there is no strict distinction between energy storage batteries and power lithium batteries yet, with the continuous improvement of energy storage battery standards, the two will eventually be separated. In fact, it has become a consensus in the industry that energy storage batteries should have their own independent standards and systems. The differences between the two application scenarios determine their distinct requirements for battery performance. Power lithium batteries place more emphasis on high energy density and high rate, while energy storage batteries focus more on long life, low cost and high safety.
Using power lithium batteries to store energy not only makes it difficult to meet performance standards, but also poses safety risks. Li Biao, director of the Energy Storage Battery Testing and Evaluation Technology Research Laboratory of the Energy Storage and New Power Technology Research Institute of China Electric Power Research Institute Co., LTD., told China Electric Power News in an interview. With the rapid development of China's energy storage industry, the performance evaluation standards and systems for energy storage batteries need to be gradually improved.
Last year, China released over ten national standards for the energy storage industry, covering energy storage batteries, energy storage converters, grid-connected energy storage systems and other energy storage equipment. At present, the national equipment standards have been basically improved, but there are still deficiencies in aspects such as system security protection, fire protection, dispatching and operation control, and life cycle management evaluation. Some problems are global technical issues that require several years of technological accumulation to be perfected.
The official standards also frankly state that in the extensive performance tests and evaluations of energy storage batteries conducted by the Electrical Technology Research Institute of our country, if the performance parameters of energy storage batteries are labeled according to the application standards of power lithium batteries, it may not even be sufficient for the most basic national standards for energy storage batteries. There is a very contradictory issue in energy storage projects at present. If energy storage batteries are strictly evaluated in accordance with national standards, the performance parameters of power lithium batteries for energy storage will drop sharply. This means that the working parameters of power lithium batteries should meet the requirements, which will lead to the cost of energy storage batteries. There is also controversy over who should pay the additional cost.
