The battery-swapping model for new energy vehicles (NEVs) is expanding nationwide from scattered pilot programs. Since late November, multiple cities including Chongqing, Wuhan, Baotou and Xuzhou have launched NEV battery-swapping operation demonstration projects. Starting next year, taxis, muck logistics trucks and other commercial vehicles adopting the battery-swapping model will be gradually rolled out to the market.
At present, Hainan and Beijing are the pilot regions for the NEV battery-swapping model in China. Recently, enthusiasm for this model has also been stirred up in other areas.
On November 26, a signing ceremony for a strategic cooperation agreement between Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd. and State Grid Corporation of China was held in Wuhan. Dongfeng Motor will join hands with State Grid to further promote the battery-swapping model.
In November, Chongqing Expressway Group signed a cooperation agreement with Geely Technology Group. The first batch of expressway service area battery-swapping demonstration stations developed by Geely Technology Group will be built at Chongqing's expressway service areas, with the first demonstration station expected to break ground in the near future.
On December 9, Baotou launched an integrated ecological project for the NEV battery-swapping network. This network includes fully automated battery-swapping stations, manual battery-swapping stations and mini community battery-swapping stations. Driven by the ecological industry of the NEV battery-swapping network, Baotou's public buses, taxis, urban logistics vehicles, sanitation sweepers and other vehicles will further achieve electrification.
Industry insiders believe that the rapid nationwide popularization of the battery-swapping model recently is mainly attributed to technological progress. With the rapid development of domestic battery technology in recent years, the battery-swapping model has gradually gained public trust, and the introduction of unified standards is on the horizon.
The industry is quite optimistic about the prospects of the battery-swapping service model. Nie Liang, Chairman of Botan Technology, opined that charging is like a landline phone—it will still exist, but its application scenarios will be limited; while battery swapping is like a mobile phone, offering great convenience, and more and more users will opt for battery swapping in the future.
